On June 1, Yiddish speakers and students gathered for a walk in the arboretum. The program was part of farbreng, a project of Yugntruf that hosts Yiddish-immersion social gatherings, and which is offered collaboratively with BWC in Boston. Over the course of the morning, 21 people attended, spanning multiple generations. Many of the attendees were local, but we also had a few friends from out of town, joining us from as far away as Hawaii and Germany. The group walked and chatted, looked up plant names in a Yiddish botanical dictionary, and stopped to sing a few Yiddish songs about trees. There will be more farbreng:boston events in the fall, and Yiddish speakers and students of all levels who want to experience a language-immersion environment are invited!

There are lots of ways to explore Yiddish culture at BWC, whether you’re looking for language immersion programs like farbreng or just starting to learn the language. We offer Yiddish classes for all levels, which will start in the fall, and we have a ongoing programs like vinkl (conversation group) and Yiddish Sing (no knowledge of Yiddish required). And save the date for our Labor Day potluck: a bilingual gathering of Yiddish speakers and students, klezmer musicians, and anyone who enjoys Yiddish culture!
