Shabes: Food and Cultural Identity in Israel/Palestine

March 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Description

Join us for a hybrid Shabes, with a gathering and potluck meal at the BWC center in Brookline and a Zoom gathering online.

The UN reports a world-wide food crisis, and as Jews we are focused especially on starvation being inflicted on the people of Gaza and crops being destroyed on the West Bank. So how and why can we focus on good food right now?

In the fall of 2023, Jonathan and Maia Brumberg-Kraus spent a month in the Palestinian Christian neighborhood of Wadi Nisnas in Haifa while he researched the promise and limitations when Palestinian citizens of Israel share their food with Israeli Jews and tourists. Jonathan and Maia explored the food worlds of Nazareth, other Muslim Arab majority towns in Israel’s Galilee region, Tel Aviv, and East Jerusalem. They spoke with Israelis and Palestinians about their food experiences with one another. Jonathan will share what he and Maia learned about food as identity, food as politics, and why for Palestinians promoting and serving their cuisine at home and in the diaspora are acts of political resistance and cultural resilience.
