The social justice committees of Boston Workers Circle are sponsoring two moderated discussions of the 2025 National Book Award winner, One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This, by Canadian author Omar El Akkad.
Part memoir, the work details El Akkad’s upbringing in Qatar and his immigration to the West, where he initially believed in the “American dream” before his career as a journalist—covering the War on Terror, Ferguson, and Black Lives Matter—began to erode that belief. It touches on the issues that our social justice committees seek to address: the inhuman way that we treat immigrants, the racism against Muslims and nonwhites, the economic injustice in our country, the slaughter in Gaza and the failure of the West to speak out against it. It is a powerful and thought-provoking look at Western hypocrisy and our own roles in that.
There will be an in-person discussion on Sunday, March 22 from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm during the Shule session in Brookline at Shule.
There will be a Zoom discussion on Tuesday, March 24, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
Registration is required for either session. After indicating whether you wish to attend the in-person session or the Zoom session, you’ll receive either the location specifics or the Zoom link, as appropriate.
We have found that even if there is a waiting list at your library to get the book, the list moves quickly and you should be able to get the book if you request it ASAP. It is powerful, but not long. It is available from your local independent bookstore in hardback for approximately $28, or as an eBook for $15.
