WHAT BWC MEMBERSHIP MEANS TO MAX GROSSMAN
Joining the Boston Workers Circle has allowed me to connect with people who genuinely care about the issues we’re fighting for.
I attended a membership event in 2024, and remember feeling immediately connected to the people I met. We shared a sense of humor, cultural touchstones, and a desire to find Jewish practice and community that aligned with our values – a practice shaped by the realities of the 2020s, actively being manifested and workshopped. It’s a practice that feels different from the one I grew up with, where attending synagogue felt obligatory. Instead, we ask: How do we meaningfully connect to our backgrounds?
BWC aligns with my values because I feel represented in ways I never experienced in my religious upbringing. Experiencing Judaism through the lens of queerness and social justice has sparked new ideas about how I want to participate in Jewish life.
It wasn’t until I joined BWC that I felt I was meeting people who truly cared and envisioned another way forward. Meeting people with a genuine, sincere, and organized commitment to making the world a better place has been invaluable.
For me, membership answers the question: Who is in my corner? It’s an opportunity to connect with people who care about building a just world, to move beyond the isolating cycles of doom scrolling and slacktivism, and to find a space where hope and organized action flourish. History shows that fighting for a complete world requires exactly that – fighting! And we can accomplish more when we are connected.
Joining means adding your voice to a group committed to action, social justice, and a shared vision of the Jewish future.
It means uplifting progressive secular Jewish values, celebrating Yiddish and other Jewish diasporic cultures, and fighting for the rights of marginalized people. Membership means contributing to a network that can stand as tall as the Jewish establishment in the Boston area, and discovering a community with an intergenerational network of like-minded individuals. And we’re growing every day!
