“There are a lot of organizations doing political organizing, but I think we’re working on something different here in terms of talking about it as a community. It really struck home for me when we had the Shabbat dinner for gay and lesbian marriage.”
New Fall Course: "In the Middle: Race, Justice and the Ashkenazim"
In the Middle: Race, Justice and the Ashkenazim
Taught by Chris Messinger
This class will consist of five Thursday sessions: October 13, October 20, October 27, November 3, and November 17. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.
Class meets from 6:30 - 8:45 PM at the BWC Building at 1762 Beacon Street in Brookline*.
“In The Middle” Focuses on the experience of Ashkenazi Jews in the US, with twin goals of a deeper understanding of Jewish identity in an American context and the ways in which anti-semitism plays out in a traditional and modern sense (with a goal of action for racial and economic justice). We will look at our family histories and patterns, as well as the transition of Ashkenazi Jews from the margins to the middle (and back again). Expect occasional readings supplemented by interactive discussions and activities. Suitable for all ages; this course does contain significant emotional content.
