SUMMARY:A Besere Velt Chorus Open Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:A Besere Velt – A Better World – is a vibrant 80-member intergenerational community chorus that weaves the heartache and irrepressible idealism of Yiddish music into a vision of justice and humanity for the 21st century. \nFor our concert next spring\, we’re thrilled to reunite with the legendary Klezmatics. We’ve had the joy of performing together about once every decade\, and each collaboration has been an exhilarating celebration of Yiddish music and culture. This concert promises to be especially meaningful: The Klezmatics are celebrating their 40th anniversary\, and A Besere Velt is celebrating our 30th! \nHave you ever watched our chorus and thought\, “That looks like fun—I’d love to try it”? Or did you sing in the High School choir and think you’d like to try it again? Now is your chance! \nABV will hold open rehearsals (no auditions!) from September through November. No need to wonder what it’s like—come experience the joy for yourself. All are welcome\, regardless of singing ability or knowledge of Yiddish. Open Rehearsals are: 9/27\, 10/4\, 10/18\, 10\,25\, 11/8\, 11/15\, 11/22 \nThere’s nothing quite like raising your voice with a large group of people. Come sing with us and be part of something truly uplifting! \nFor details\, contact abv@circleboston.org.

SUMMARY:Adult Ed Class: Exploring Belonging Through Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: In this four-part course\, facilitator Sarah Plotkin will guide participants in exploring Jewish belonging\, what it means to us\, and how we can create a greater sense of belonging through various theatrical modalities. In the first session we will learn storytelling techniques and have the opportunity to share personal stories about experiences of belonging and not belonging in Jewish community. In the second session we’ll explore monologue writing\, with space for participants to create monologues inspired by theirs or other’s experiences of belonging. In the third session we’ll explore our experiences of belonging through movement and gesture (movement will be participant-led and accessible for all bodies)\, and have the opportunity to integrate movement into our storytelling. And finally\, in the fourth session we’ll share out the short theatrical pieces we’ve created. \nNo prior theatrical experience is needed! Just an openness to explore together. \nAll sessions will be recorded and made available to registrants. \nCourse Sessions:Session #1: Storytelling ExplorationSession #2: Monologue Writing ExplorationSession #3: Movement and Gesture ExplorationSession #4: Class Sharing \nCourse Guiding Questions: \n\n\nWhat does it mean to belong in Jewish community? \n\n\nHow does it feel to belong / not belong? Where does that feeling sit in our bodies and how can we express it? \n\n\nHow can we use theater to create more spaces of Jewish belonging in our lives \n\n\nAbout the Instructor:  Sarah Plotkin is a Jewish director\, educator and cultural worker who uses theater to re-imagine what we want our culture to become. She co-creates liberatory\, collaborative artistic spaces where we can vision a better future together and rehearse mutual aid. Previous projects with Jewish communities include: Kol Isha\, a theater project with Jewish teens exploring the intersections of racial identity\, gender identity and Jewish identity in their lives\, produced in partnership with Temple Israel\, Boston and co-facilitated by Dana Edel; The Coming Together Project\, a virtual storytelling project exploring how we built Jewish community during the pandemic\, co-facilitated by Rebecca Powell and Jesse Garlick; and Creating Our Stories\, a production exploring what it means to be Jewish today with an intergenerational group of community artists. \nBefore moving to Upstate New York\, Sarah lived in Boston\, where she co-facilitated anti-racism workshops with Jewish communities through Kavod. She now lives in Ithaca\, NY and teaches playwriting at Tompkins Cortland Community College as well as directing professional and educational productions across the region. Sarah holds an MA in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre from Emerson College.

SUMMARY:Yiddish Language Class - Advanced - Dorem Afrikanish: Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The course will open with an introduction to historical\, sociological and literary contexts of Yiddish in South Africa. \nWe will then study a selection of stories\, poems and monologues from some of South Africa’s finest Yiddish writers. Course content will include courageous\, critical and thought-provoking materials that will inspire meaningful discussions about race\, class\, language\, representation\, and Jewish and Yiddish community responses to oppression and discrimination. These short stories and poems will be interwoven with aesthetic poems on life\, love\, lust and local landscapes. Humorous monologues will round out the materials. \nThe course content will provide a snapshot of a significant\, yet rarely-studied Yiddish community. This content is highly relevant today. As we witness the global rise in white supremacy and the far-right\, grapple with issues of racism\, apartheid and allyship\, and experience deep rifts within Jewish communities\, South African Yiddish writing presents parallels that offer illumination\, insight\, and perhaps inspiration\, for the work before us today. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:A Besere Velt Chorus Open Rehearsal

No need to wonder what it’s like—come experience the joy for yourself. All are welcome\, regardless of singing ability or knowledge of Yiddish. Open Rehearsals are: 9/27\, 10/4\, 10/18\, 10\,25\, 11/8\, 11/15\, 11/22 \nThere’s nothing quite like raising your voice with a large group of people.
