SUMMARY:Write a New Protest Song
DESCRIPTION:As we head into (further) political uncertainty\, we come together to use our creativity and raise our voices. In this workshop led by Adah Hetko\, we’ll explore types and uses of protest songs\, and characteristics that make protest songs useful\, powerful\, and memorable. Then\, we’ll brainstorm song topics and phrases together\, take time to work on songs (individually or in small groups) in a supportive environment\, and regroup for an optional share-back. No songwriting experience necessary and all languages welcome. \nRegister here. \nAbout the presenter: Adah Hetko is a Yiddish singer/songwriter\, dance-leader and educator based in Roslindale\, MA. Several of her compositions are featured on the album Levyosn’s Lullaby\, recorded with her ensemble Levyosn (Ashkenazi Hebrew for “Leviathan”)\, and released by Borscht Beat in June 2023. Levyosn’s Lullaby has been described as “one of those special recordings that brings joy and a smile each time it is heard” (Ari Davidow) and “a warm Yiddish blanket [to] calm your frayed nerves” (Rokhl Kafrissen). The ensemble’s second album\, Levyosn’s Dream\, will be released in June 2026. Adah has developed her knowledge and skills in many ways\, including performing with ensemble Soloveychicks\, completing an ethnographic study of contemporary Yiddish women singers (and completing an MA in Jewish Studies at Indiana University in the process)\, teaching Yiddish songwriting with Daniel Kahn and Josh Waletzky\, studying Yiddish song and dance-leading with veteran artist Judy Bressler\, and teaching Yiddish songs to students ages 5-95. Check out Adah’s website to learn more about her work. \nThis program is presented in partnership by BWC’s Yiddish Committee and Acting for Racial and Economic Justice Committee.

SUMMARY:Yiddish Language Class - Advanced - Dorem Afrikanish: Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The course will open with an introduction to historical\, sociological and literary contexts of Yiddish in South Africa. \nWe will then study a selection of stories\, poems and monologues from some of South Africa’s finest Yiddish writers. Course content will include courageous\, critical and thought-provoking materials that will inspire meaningful discussions about race\, class\, language\, representation\, and Jewish and Yiddish community responses to oppression and discrimination. These short stories and poems will be interwoven with aesthetic poems on life\, love\, lust and local landscapes. Humorous monologues will round out the materials. \nThe course content will provide a snapshot of a significant\, yet rarely-studied Yiddish community. This content is highly relevant today. As we witness the global rise in white supremacy and the far-right\, grapple with issues of racism\, apartheid and allyship\, and experience deep rifts within Jewish communities\, South African Yiddish writing presents parallels that offer illumination\, insight\, and perhaps inspiration\, for the work before us today. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:A Besere Velt Chorus Open Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:A Besere Velt – A Better World – is a vibrant 80-member intergenerational community chorus that weaves the heartache and irrepressible idealism of Yiddish music into a vision of justice and humanity for the 21st century. \nFor our concert next spring\, we’re thrilled to reunite with the legendary Klezmatics. We’ve had the joy of performing together about once every decade\, and each collaboration has been an exhilarating celebration of Yiddish music and culture. This concert promises to be especially meaningful: The Klezmatics are celebrating their 40th anniversary\, and A Besere Velt is celebrating our 30th! \nHave you ever watched our chorus and thought\, “That looks like fun—I’d love to try it”? Or did you sing in the High School choir and think you’d like to try it again? Now is your chance! \nABV will hold open rehearsals (no auditions!) from September through November. No need to wonder what it’s like—come experience the joy for yourself. All are welcome\, regardless of singing ability or knowledge of Yiddish. Open Rehearsals are: 9/27\, 10/4\, 10/18\, 10\,25\, 11/8\, 11/15\, 11/22 \nThere’s nothing quite like raising your voice with a large group of people. Come sing with us and be part of something truly uplifting! \nFor details\, contact abv@circleboston.org.
