For most of our community members\, if we want a Yiddish-speaking environment\, we have to proactively create one—so that’s what we’re doing! Here are some guidelines for being part of a language-immersion activity. \nAsking how to say something? Perfectly fine; we do this all the time. Tossing in a short English word or phrase—especially an idiom or quote—while keeping the conversation in Yiddish? Common among American Yiddish speakers and also perfectly fine. However\, we ask participants to avoid telling anecdotes or otherwise speaking in English for an extended period of time. Conversing in English disrupts the Yiddish-language environment\, and it takes away learning opportunities for students. Yiddish speakers and students at all levels are welcome at farbreng. It’s normal to feel nervous about your Yiddish\, but we applaud and encourage all students and speakers to use Yiddish. We will mend in community with one another and practice a timeless skill that honors the clothes we wear and the care we take of them.  \nLearn to visibly mend your clothes with darning\, a woven fabric patching technique that can be used to repair holes and reinforce fabrics to revitalize your well-loved garments and celebrate the act of repair.  \nAt this workshop\, we will teach you to visibly mend a garment using the darning technique. Please bring a garment you would like to mend\, such as a threadbare sock or a hole-y t-shirt.
