SUMMARY:Intermediate Yiddish: Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Build confidence in your Yiddish – reading\, speaking\, and listening\, in a supportive and welcoming classroom of intermediate Yiddish students. We’ll focus on building reading fluency\, comprehension strategies\, dictionary skills\, and making meaning from texts while enjoying selections from the canon of Yiddish literature. In this class\, you will find abundant opportunities to stretch and grow your Yiddish. We’ll read slowly\, translate continuously\, and look up every unfamiliar word as we read (in Yiddish) and discuss (in English and Yiddish) literature together. This semester\, we’ll continue reading the memoirs of 19th-century feminist icon Puah Rakovsky\, whose spellbinding tell-all memoir describes her experiences of arranged marriage\, teen motherhood\, rejecting her religious upbringing\, divorcing her parents’ son-in-law\, starting a career\, and becoming one of the world’s first women’s rights activists. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:“From Margin to Center\, From Opposition to Power” - a Conversation with Dove Kent on her Vision for the Jewish Left
DESCRIPTION:At the Conference on the Jewish Left in February\, Dove Kent presented a provocative talk. (View the recording here.) Join Dove and BWC’s Israel Palestine Committee on April 14 from 7:30 to 9:00pm on Zoom for a deep dive on how we go “From Margin to Center\, From Opposition to Power”.  \nIn her talk\, Dove asserts that it is time for the Jewish Left to advance a vision for fighting antisemitism in the context of fighting all oppressions\, in a multiracial democratic movement. It’s time for the Jewish Left to lead a coalition that replaces the “legacy” Jewish organizations\, currently in disarray due to their failed strategy of aligning with the U.S. right and exceptionalizing Jews. Since these organizations no longer speak for the majority of U.S. Jews\, the U.S. Jewish Left (the most organized in the world) has an opportunity to build a movement based on Jewish values.  \nJoin us as BWC Executive Director\, Rebecca Zimmerman Hornstein\, moderates a Q&A session where Dove will elaborate on the ideas she presented at the Conference as\, together\, we explore next steps for BWC and like-minded Jewish Left institutions. \nDove Kent has two decades of experience in grassroots organizing\, political education\, and movement building. She served as the Executive Director of Jews for Racial & Economic Justice\, Senior Strategy Officer at Bend the Arc\, co-Founder of Tzedek Lab\, and currently as the Interim International Executive Director of Diaspora Alliance. Dove is a nationally recognized leader and teacher on dismantling antisemitism and has been published in anthologies and news outlets including The Guardian\, NPR\, Ha’aretz\, and Jewish Currents. She is the co-author of the culture-shifting publication “Understanding Antisemitism: An Offering to our Movement.” \nRegister here: bit.ly/DoveKentConvo

For most of our community members\, if we want a Yiddish-speaking environment\, we have to proactively create one—so that’s what we’re doing! Here are some guidelines for being part of a language-immersion activity. \nAsking how to say something? Perfectly fine; we do this all the time. Tossing in a short English word or phrase—especially an idiom or quote—while keeping the conversation in Yiddish? Common among American Yiddish speakers and also perfectly fine. However\, we ask participants to avoid telling anecdotes or otherwise speaking in English for an extended period of time. Conversing in English disrupts the Yiddish-language environment\, and it takes away learning opportunities for students. Yiddish speakers and students at all levels are welcome at farbreng. It’s normal to feel nervous about your Yiddish\, but we applaud and encourage all students and speakers to use Yiddish. If you have any questions about the program\, please write to us at farbreng-boston@yugntruf.org \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:"Let’s Build a Room for Hope" Grief & Healing YA Community Care Session
DESCRIPTION:We are living in a time of immense grief and political oversaturation. From events unfolding abroad—like the wars in Gaza and Ukraine—to the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S.\, layered on top of personal grief\, burnout\, and loss\, it can feel like the weight never really lets up. This is the backdrop of our lives as we move into adulthood: building relationships\, careers\, and identities at a time when the future often feels bleak\, unstable\, and deeply uncertain. \nAnd yet\, even in this moment\, there are real possibilities for hope—hope rooted in connection\, collective care\, radical compassion\, and meaningful action. \nWhat are you grieving right now? How do Jewish values and ways of thinking help you make sense of that grief? How does being Jewish connect you to community\, sustain hope\, and shape how you show up in the world—especially when the path forward feels unclear? \nJoin us for a reflective\, grounded conversation on grief\, hope\, and healing in community\, inspired by “Let’s Build a Room for Hope” by Rabbi Miriam Grossman. Together\, we’ll create space to name what we’re holding\, connect with others navigating similar questions\, and explore how grief can be shared\, held\, and transformed into care\, solidarity\, and action. \nAbout Sammie: Sammie is a member of BWC and a doctoral student in psychology\, with a focus on liberation psychology and healing through radical compassion. She is deeply invested in community care\, inspired by Rabbi Miriam’s work\, and grateful to be holding this space together with BWC. \nRegister at https://bit.ly/ya0419

SUMMARY:Intermediate Yiddish: Virtual

This semester\, we’ll continue reading the memoirs of 19th-century feminist icon Puah Rakovsky\, whose spellbinding tell-all memoir describes her experiences of arranged marriage\, teen motherhood\, rejecting her religious upbringing\, divorcing her parents’ son-in-law\, starting a career\, and becoming one of the world’s first women’s rights activists. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Jewish Muslim Solidarity Committee Meeting

It is especially focused on Muslims’ and Jews’ mutual interest in continuing to learn about and engage with one another\, including on difficult issues\, all the while recognizing our common interest in opposing all manifestations of Islamophobia and antisemitism\, by standing together in the face of any form of ethnic harassment. The JMSC engages in political action\, community education\, and cooperative efforts with Boston area Muslims and Jews to foster its goal of deepening Jewish-Muslim understanding and solidarity. Our work is based on our belief that human rights are universal and human communities and individuals share the same rights and responsibilities toward one another.  To find out more about the meeting and get the zoom link\, please email jms@circleboston.org

SUMMARY:Jews Demand: ICE Out!
DESCRIPTION:On April 30\, Jews around the country will gather to demand ICE OUT\, anchored by a mass action in New York City. We’re doing this because we stand with immigrants and reject ICE brutality and violence. We want ICE out of our schools and workplaces\, out of our parks and streets\, out of our places of worship\, and out of communities everywhere. Grounded in our sacred teachings\, we will make the moral case that this system is both a failure of policy and of conscience\, and that it does not have to be this way. Jews demand: ICE Out! Local stand-outs are organized by JALSA. Bring signs and wear BWC T-shirts if you can. Contact Judy Somberg\, judy.somberg@gmail.com\, for more information. \nMore information from Bend the Arc here. \nNoon to 1 pm at 315 Harvard St\, Brookline\, and 5:30 to 6:15pm at 696 Centre St. JP
