SUMMARY:A Conversation with Authors Shane Burley and Ben Lorber
DESCRIPTION:Join BWC\, Nehar Shalom\, Pushcart Judaica\, and Kavod Boston for a book talk with Shane Burley and Ben Lorber. \nTwo activist journalists present a progressive\, intersectional approach to the vital question: What can we do about antisemitism? \n\nAntisemitism is a central issue of our time. Under the new Trump administration\, white Christian nationalism is stronger than ever\, and its culture of authoritarianism\, conspiracism\, division and fear puts Jews along with all other marginalized groups at risk. \n\nAnd since October 7\, debates around antisemitism have become more polarized and high-stakes than ever. How can we stand in solidarity with Palestinians seeking justice\, while also avoiding antisemitism — and resisting those who seek to conflate the two? How do we forge the coalitions across communities that we need\, in order to confront the shared threats we face and build towards a better future? \n\nUsing personal stories\, historical deep-dives\, front-line reporting\, and interviews with leading change-makers\, Burley and Lorber help us break the current impasse to understand how antisemitism works\, what’s missing in contemporary debates\, and how to build true safety through solidarity\, for Jews and all people. \n\nShane Burley is the author of several books on the far-right and social movements\, and has contributed to outlets such as NBC News\, Jewish Currents\, Al Jazeera\, The Baffler\, The Daily Beast\, Haaretz\, In These Times\, Yes! Magazine\, Tikkun\, and The Oregon Historical Quarterly. \n\nBen Lorber is Senior Research Analyst at Political Research Associates\, a social movement think tank\, where he studies and publishes on antisemitism and white Christian nationalism.

SUMMARY:Yiddish Language Class: Advanced Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Hinde Ena Burstin \nLevel: The class is suited to advanced readers and speakers of Yiddish\, including students in previous BWC advanced classes and intermediates ready to make the leap to a new level. We will read and discuss a selection of Fradl Shtok’s writing in Yiddish\, in a supportive environment that encourages each person to speak Yiddish freely and fearlessly to the best of their ability. Students who want to listen rather than read are welcome to join the class. \nWondering whether this class is right for you? If you’d like to be in a warm\, nurturing class that’s conducted in Yiddish\, and that will extend your Yiddish language proficiency and your understanding of Yiddish literature\, we encourage you to give it a try! RSVP for a trial class here. \nMaterials:  We will study a selection of short stories\, poems and critical writing by Fradl Shtok. The stories will be drawn from Shtok’s 1919 collection\, Gezamlte ertseylungen\, which can be downloaded for free from the Yiddish Book Centre here. Copies of poems\, critical writings\, and other course materials will be provided. \nCourse Description: Fradl Shtok (1890-1990) is an enigmatic and captivating writer of passionate poems\, finely observed short stories\, and illuminating literary essays. Her short stories capture the nuances of shtetl and immigrant life\, peeling away the layers with sharp\, ironic perceptions. Her pioneering sonnets and other poems are crafted with skill\, precision and attention to aesthetics that juxtaposes powerfully with the unrestrained desire that many of her poems embody. Studying Shtok’s texts in Yiddish enables the reader to savour the sensuous sounds\, skillful wordplay and musicality that are central to her writing.
