SUMMARY:“From Margin to Center\, From Opposition to Power” - a Conversation with Dove Kent on her Vision for the Jewish Left
DESCRIPTION:At the Conference on the Jewish Left in February\, Dove Kent presented a provocative talk. (View the recording here.) Join Dove and BWC’s Israel Palestine Committee on April 14 from 7:30 to 9:00pm on Zoom for a deep dive on how we go “From Margin to Center\, From Opposition to Power”.  \nIn her talk\, Dove asserts that it is time for the Jewish Left to advance a vision for fighting antisemitism in the context of fighting all oppressions\, in a multiracial democratic movement. It’s time for the Jewish Left to lead a coalition that replaces the “legacy” Jewish organizations\, currently in disarray due to their failed strategy of aligning with the U.S. right and exceptionalizing Jews. Since these organizations no longer speak for the majority of U.S. Jews\, the U.S. Jewish Left (the most organized in the world) has an opportunity to build a movement based on Jewish values.  \nJoin us as BWC Executive Director\, Rebecca Zimmerman Hornstein\, moderates a Q&A session where Dove will elaborate on the ideas she presented at the Conference as\, together\, we explore next steps for BWC and like-minded Jewish Left institutions. \nDove Kent has two decades of experience in grassroots organizing\, political education\, and movement building. She served as the Executive Director of Jews for Racial & Economic Justice\, Senior Strategy Officer at Bend the Arc\, co-Founder of Tzedek Lab\, and currently as the Interim International Executive Director of Diaspora Alliance. Dove is a nationally recognized leader and teacher on dismantling antisemitism and has been published in anthologies and news outlets including The Guardian\, NPR\, Ha’aretz\, and Jewish Currents. She is the co-author of the culture-shifting publication “Understanding Antisemitism: An Offering to our Movement.” \nRegister here: bit.ly/DoveKentConvo

SUMMARY:Fighting Antisemitism (& Its Weaponization)
DESCRIPTION:The Israel/Palestine Committee\, Acting for Racial and Economic Justice\, and the Jewish Muslim Solidarity Committee invite you to join us on Wednesday\, August 20\, 7-9 pm for a teach-in titled Fighting Antisemitism (& Its Weaponization). The teach-in\, created by Together for an Inclusive Massachusetts (TIM)\, challenges the narrative emerging from the MA Special Commission on Combating Antisemitism and argues that antisemitism is best understood within a framework of collective liberation. \nThis is a member-only\, in-person event at BWC with a virtual option. \nIt will feature a screening of a new film\, followed by discussion. Tikkun Olam Productions has filmed 6 experts\, including our own executive director\, Rebecca Zimmerman Hornstein\, and BWC member Chris MacDonald Dennis\, discussing topics that include: What is antisemitism and how is it being weaponized? What is the history of Jews’ relation to Zionism and Antizionism? How might we think about the safety of American Jews in this political moment? \nThe Special Commission will be putting out its report in November. We will discuss how we can engage with our legislators NOW to resist the weaponization of antisemitism\, the chilling of free speech\, and the suppression of the diversity of Jewish opinion. \nRegister here. \nFor more information\, contact Lynne Layton (laytonlynne22@gmail.com) or Carrie Pollack (carrie.m.pollack@gmail.com)

SUMMARY:Understanding Anti-Palestinian Racism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We invite BWC member leaders and community members to join Merrie Najimy and the Institute for the Understanding of Anti-Palestinian Racism (IUAPR) for a special opportunity to grow as a community and move towards taking meaningful next steps as anti-racist allies.Join AFREJ\, the Jewish Muslim Solidarity Committee\, and the Palestine Solidarity Subcommittee of the IPC in a safe\, welcoming\, BWC-only space to learn about who the Palestinians are as a people and collectively unpack the false narratives in which American society is steeped. \nOn Sunday\, December 8th from 6:30 – 9:00pm\, we will meet on Zoom to learn from Merrie and the IUAPR. After the presentation\, we’ll engage in community conversation to reflect on and process what we’ve learned\, both as individuals and as members of BWC. \nThe workshop will help us to:•    Know who Palestinians are;•    Describe anti-Palestinian racism;•    Identify who can be targets of anti-Palestinian racism;•    Understand the impact of anti-Palestinian racism on health wellbeing;•    Learn ways to address anti-Palestinian racism. \nQuestions? Contact Carrie Pollack (cmpollack@comcast.net). \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:CfP Joint Memorial Watch Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the Nakba/Israeli War Dead \nJoin Boston Workers Circle to watch the 19th annual Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony\, broadcast live from Israel/Palestine. As described by Combatants for Peace\, “the joint memorial event is a unique opportunity for Israelis and Palestinians to grieve together and stand united in demanding an end to the bloodshed. In mourning together\, we seek not to equate experiences\, but rather transform despair into hope and build compassion around our shared humanity. We remind ourselves and the world that occupation\, oppression\, and conflict are not inevitable.”  \n \nWe will watch this moving ceremony together on a large screen\, followed by time to share our thoughts and feelings\, especially in light of the ongoing tragedy in Gaza. The 1:15pm gathering time makes it perfect for a post Mother’s Day Brunch or pre-Mother’s Day Dinner family activity. This event is appropriate for family members of all ages. Light refreshments provided.  \n \nPlease register here to watch the Memorial Day Ceremony together on May 12\, 1:15-3pm at Boston Workers Circle\, 6 Webster Street\, Brookline. On Wednesday\, May 15\, 1pm there will also be a live streamed Nakba Remembrance.  \nRegister Here.

DESCRIPTION:Tentative Agenda: \n\nReports from subcommittees\, ad-hoc groups\, etc. \nReport about the International Court of Justice decision and what it means\nSmall-group discussions on the use of the word “genocide” \nBrainstorm and feedback on the potential demands that we would put into a new statement about Gaza \n\nAs you can see\, we intend to have some deep and important discussions at this meeting\, so we hope you will be able to attend.  In preparation\, we recommend the following readings/viewings\, etc.  \n\nBrant Rosen Op-Ed\, Sept. 2023\, “On Yom Kippur\, Solidarity With Palestinians Is a Sacred Act.\n” Rosen makes an argument for using language without fear. While he doesn’t explicitly talk about genocide\, he talks about other terms\, such as apartheid and settler colonialism. \n“The ICJs Ruling Was the First Crack in Israel’s Armor of Impunity.” \nBarghouti webinar hosted at Harvard: “Why the BDS movement has never been more important – a discussion with Omar Barghouti.” Barghouti has studied the South Africa anti-apartheid movement and this webinar includes lots of meaty ideas about both this moment and the long-term future; if you don’t have time for the whole thing\, watch the first 30 minutes.

SUMMARY:IPC Meeting: Beyond The Red Line: Grappling with Jewish Identity & Justice for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Red Line: Grappling with Jewish Identity and Justice for Palestine \nJewish identity in the United States has increasingly become conflated with unwavering support of\, allegiance to\, and belief in the State of Israel. How then\, when we have a strong critique of Israel’s actions (especially in the past few months) or perhaps even of its foundation as a religious or ethnonational state\, can we connect meaningfully with our Jewish heritage and find a home in the larger Jewish community? And what can we do when we are pressured to stay within a red line* that may violate our values\, or risk expulsion from the larger community?  \nCome learn about three progressive Jewish communities who have dealt with this challenge\, and whose Jewish identity and understanding of justice for Palestine are neither defined nor constrained by the Jewish establishment’s positions on Israel. \nTuesday\, December 12 – 7:00 – 8:30 PM \nZoom registration link: https://bit.ly/IPCRedlining  \nRabbi Brant Rosen – Tzedek Chicago\, IL \nTalie Lewis – Co-chair of Kavod Israel/Palestine Task Force\, Boston MA \nRabbi Rebecca Zimmerman-Hornstein – Executive Director\, Boston Workers Circle\, Boston\, MA \n*The red line\, or “to cross the red line\,” is a phrase used worldwide to mean a figurative point of no return or line in the sand.

SUMMARY:Israel-Palestine Committee Meeting: Free Speech Under Threat
DESCRIPTION:The program will focus on the attack on free speech that is currently underway and directed at Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) as well as progressive Jewish groups.  The ADL has sent a letter to almost 200 colleges and universities accusing SJP of violating “the prohibition against materially supporting a foreign terrorist organization” with absolutely no evidence. Brandeis has dechartered its chapter of SJP for chanting “From the River to the Sea”. Come learn and mobilize with us!                 \nA new member orientation will follow. \nRegister for the Zoom Here

SUMMARY:Interfaith Mass Action: Ceasefire Now
DESCRIPTION:As people of conscience of every faith and background\, we hold every life as sacred. As clergy\, faith leaders\, and people of faith\, we call on all of our siblings in spirit to rise up and demand that our elected officials use all of their leverage to call for a ceasefire. We mourn all dead and are fighting for all lives. \nWe commit to using our diverse spiritual practices of word\, song\, and ritual to preserve life\, to demand an end to the bombardment of Gaza\, allow humanitarian aid\, release all political prisoners and hostages\, and fight for a world where Palestinians are free and there is safety for all. \n \nFor three weeks our thousands of marches\, school walkouts\, phone banks\, and Congressional office sit-ins have awakened the US public. It is working. The majority of Americans now support a ceasefire. It’s time our politicians take action. We pray that they act and we will keep acting until they do. \n \nFor three weeks our thousands of marches\, school walkouts\, phone banks\, and Congressional office sit-ins have awakened the US public. SUMMARY:Rally in Support of Ceasefire in Israel/Palestine at City Hall Plaza
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here to join us at City Hall Plaza in Boston on Wednesday\, October 18 to mourn for the dead\, and fight for the living–both Israelis and Palestinians.  \nThis is a Jewish-led action\, sponsored by IfNotNow and co-sponsored by Boston Workers Circle and Kavod. \nWe welcome and encourage our non-Jewish allies to join us.  \n————————————————————– \n \n“No electricity\, no food\, no water\, no fuel. Everything is closed. We are fighting human animals\, and we act accordingly.” This promise\, from Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant\, is a direct call for mass killing and forced removal of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes.  \nThe Israeli military is preparing for a massive ground invasion of Gaza. Israeli and American leaders are dehumanizing Palestinians with vitriolic rhetoric that calls to mind the most hysterical days of Bush’s War on Terror. We know where this will lead: genocide. \nOur Massachusetts Senators and every American political leader must demand a ceasefire now. \nMany of us are mourning our Israeli and Palestinian friends and loved ones. We are in pain and grief\, trying to process a week of horrific violence that has left so many that we know injured\, traumatized\, kidnapped\, or killed. But we refuse to let our grief be weaponized to justify the murder of more Palestinians. As American Jews\, we demand a ceasefire now. \nNo genocide in our name.  \nThe time is now to mobilize to prevent this genocide from going forward. We demand that every political leader use their leverage to implement a ceasefire and use any possible tool to force Israel to halt its war on Palestinians in Gaza. \nRSVP here for more information\, and meet us at 4pm at City Hall Plaza on Wednesday\, October 18th.

DESCRIPTION:BWC is excited to co-present a book event with IfNotNow\, Jewish Voice for Peace\, and the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine. Please join us in person or on zoom and invite your friends to hear and engage with Linda Dittmar as she shares her powerful story of the early years of Israel’s statehood and the Palestinian Nakba. \nIsraeli-American writer and academic Linda Dittmar is the author of Tracing Homelands; Israel\, Palestine\, and the Claims of Belonging. Part history\, part travelogue\, and part memoir\, it is a braided account of Israel’s early years of statehood and the Palestinian Nakba—the “catastrophe” of mass expulsion—remembered as an Israeli child growing into young adulthood and as an adult\, now living in the U.S.\, who comes to see that history with new eyes. A recipient of an Artist Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, Linda’s writings have appeared in The Massachusetts Review\, Jewish Currents\, Harvard’s Divinity School’s Bulletin\, Consequence\, and Nowhere magazine. \nMasks and rapid tests are recommended for in person attendance\, and registration is required whether attendance is in person or via Zoom.Register Here.

SUMMARY:1for3 Speaks at Palestine Solidarity & Jewish-Muslim Solidarity Joint Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Tuesday\, April 11th at 7:15-8:45 pm on Zoom for a special joint meeting of the BWC IPC Palestine Solidarity Committee and the Jewish Muslim Solidarity Committee! We’ll be hearing about 1for3.org‘s exciting plans to expand early childhood education in the UN-run Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem\, Palestine. The Boston Workers Circle has had a long relationship with 1for3.org\, a Massachusetts-based non-profit that focuses on four primary challenges in the lives of Palestinian refugees: Water – Food – Health – Education. In past years\, BWC has participated in 1for3’s Walk for Water\, raising money and awareness about the critical impact of the occupation on the need for water and the inequitable distribution of water in Israel/Palestine. Right now our friends are asking us to support early childhood education in the Aida Camp by fundraising for the Expansion of the Zahrat Al-Yasmeen Kindergarten. Nidal Al-Azraq\, executive director of 1for3\, and Katherine Hanna\, founder of the kindergarten program\, will join us to share more about their plans to add a third classroom. We’ll learn about the kindergarten’s innovative inclusive\, play-based and trauma-informed curriculum\, which provides a space “where children can be children” and find joy\, hope\, and healing amidst the harshness of the occupation. So please\, come listen\, learn\, and help BWC support this important and wonderful effort! Register here.

SUMMARY:BWC Night of Action for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join Boston Workers Circle and the Palestine Solidarity Subcommittee (of the Israel-Palestine Committee) on Sunday\, December 4\, at 7 – 8:30pm ET\, for a night of learning and action in community on Zoom. Click here to register! \nWe will follow up on some of the actions BWC has taken together in the past and update our understanding of urgent situations like land theft\, expulsions\, and house demolitions in Masafer Yatta; ongoing Israeli settler violence in the West Bank; and the apartheid system designating vastly separate treatment for Israelis and Palestinians under the law in the State of Israel. \nOur actions may include contacting our legislators\, signing petitions\, making donations\, and more. All attendees are welcome to participate in or opt out of any actions we take as a group. This evening will give us a chance to come together as a community and put our new Israel/Palestine Principles into action. We at the PSSC hope to build a greater shared awareness of what’s happening in the region\, and of what Palestinians are asking international allies to do to support them\, to empower our community members to plug in and support desperately needed change from our homes here in Boston. \nRegister here to join us December 4!

SUMMARY:IDF Veterans and the True Cost of Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsored with New Israel Fund\, Temple Israel Boston\, and Dorshei Tzedek. \nAs the occupation enters its 56th year\, most Israelis are walled off from the reality of everyday life in the occupied Palestinian territories – literally and figuratively. New Israel Fund grantee Breaking the Silence was founded by a group of IDF veterans who wanted to break down that barrier to educate the Israeli public and spread the word among diaspora Jews worldwide about the moral and human costs of the occupation. \nJoin us for a conversation with two Breaking the Silence members and a screening of Mission: Hebron\, a 20-minute documentary by Rona Segal based on the testimony of Israeli soldiers who served in the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank. We hope this dynamic film will inspire you to get your question answered. \nSince 2004\, Breaking the Silence has published testimonies\, conducted tours in the West Bank\, and documented the harsh realities of the occupation through the voices of former soldiers. NIF is particularly proud to support Breaking the Silence’s efforts to bring the reality of the occupation to young Israelis before they begin their military service. \nRegister Here.

SUMMARY:Screening of "BOYCOTT"
DESCRIPTION:Thirty-Four states have passed laws criminalizing BDS (Boycott\, Divestment\, and Sanctions)\, a non-violent attempt to pressure Israel into ending the occupation. BWC’s principles stand against the criminalization of constitutionally protected free-speech. BOYCOTT\, this award-winning film\, produced by JustVision.org\, documents the cases of several people who have been caught up in their state’s Anti-BDS laws and delves into the court cases surrounding them. \nPremiering in Boston at the Palestine Film Festival in October\, the Anti-Anti-BDS subcommittee of BWC’s Israel-Palestine Committee has arranged for a screening for all of BWC on Nov 10th at 7PM to be followed by a discussion led by a staff member of JustVision. \nRegister Here.
