SUMMARY:Collective Liberation Workshop with artist Julie Weitz
DESCRIPTION:Led by The Psychedelic Tzadik—the drag king persona of artist Julie Weitz—participants are invited to transform existential tsuris (trouble) into creative discovery through clowning\, storytelling\, and embodied improvisation. Drawing from Yiddish culture\, Hasidic wisdom\, and drag\, this participatory experience offers a playful yet profound space to explore identity\, justice\, and cultural memory. Together\, we confront personal and collective challenges while embracing the joy\, absurdity\, and radical potential of clowning. \nCurrently based in Berlin\, Julie Weitz (she/her) is an artist\, writer\, and educator who creates embodied\, collective experiences for repair by unearthing the wounds and resilience of diasporic culture. Her research-driven practice animates figures from Yiddish folklore\, exploring themes of loss and healing through their interactions at culturally significant sites—especially those where Yiddish culture was nearly eradicated.Through caricature\, folklorism\, and emplacement\, Weitz situates her practice within evolving trajectories of Jewish cultural expression\, in solidarity with global liberation movements. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Boston Workers Circle. Please share with anyone who’d be interested! Click here to register. The suggested sliding scale for this workshop is $18–48\, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. Donations will go directly to the artist to cover supplies and labor. Also\, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Free Gaza Circus. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:BWC-Wide Book Discussion: "One Day\, Everyone Will Always Have Been Against This"
DESCRIPTION:The social justice committees of Boston Workers Circle are sponsoring two moderated discussions of the 2025 National Book Award winner\, One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This\, by Canadian author Omar El Akkad. \nPart memoir\, the work details El Akkad’s upbringing in Qatar and his immigration to the West\, where he initially believed in the “American dream” before his career as a journalist—covering the War on Terror\, Ferguson\, and Black Lives Matter—began to erode that belief. It touches on the issues that our social justice committees seek to address: the inhuman way that we treat immigrants\, the racism against Muslims and nonwhites\, the economic injustice in our country\, the slaughter in Gaza and the failure of the West to speak out against it. It is a powerful and thought-provoking look at Western hypocrisy and our own roles in that. \nThere will be an in-person discussion on Sunday\, March 22 from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm during the Shule session in Brookline. \nThere will be a Zoom discussion on Tuesday\, March 24\, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. \nRegistration is required for either session. After indicating whether you wish to attend the in-person session or the Zoom session\, you’ll receive either the location specifics or the Zoom link\, as appropriate. \nWe have found that even if there is a waiting list at your library to get the book\, the list moves quickly and you should be able to get the book if you request it ASAP. It is powerful\, but not long. It is available from your local independent bookstore in hardback for approximately $28\, or as an eBook for $15. \nQuestions? Send them to: migolden57@gmail.com \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Material Witness: A Mixed Media Exhibition/Discussion - Exploring my mother's experience during the Holocaust and the parallels immigrants are living through today.
DESCRIPTION:Through Nancy Marks’ art and poetry\, Material Witness confronts the chilling parallels between her mothers’s hiding in France in the 1940s and the realities faced by immigrants today. The echoes between the 1940s and our contemporary world are undeniable and demand witness. This mixed-media installation\, which premiered in Boston in 2025\, features twenty-five drypoint prints and original poems. The images invite viewers to see them through a dual lens: ‘then’ and ‘now.’ What befell Jews\, Roma\, leftists\, and so many others targeted in that era resonates starkly with the experiences of immigrants navigating hostile systems and rhetoric today. Material Witness presents interwoven histories\, holding the pain of the past alongside the urgencies of the present. \nViewing of the exhibit will be accompanied by a discussion with the artist. Drinks and snacks will be provided. \nThis event is being sponsored by the Jewish Muslim Solidarity Committee\, the Immigrant Justice Committee\, the Israel Palestine Committee\, and the Yiddish Committee.
