SUMMARY:The Doctrine of Discovery: An Interfaith Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Please join Sarah Augustine (Author of The Land is Not Empty) and Rabbi Toba Spitzer Wednesday evening November 11th 7-8:30 on Zoom in an important conversation about Native American history and politics in our current moment.  \nSarah Augustine’s work explores the harms of the Doctrine of Discovery\, a set of international policies from the 15th Century that laid the groundwork for white supremacy\, racism and colonization of Indigenous Peoples and people of color around the globe. These papal policies were adopted into US law by the Supreme Court in 1823. The original policies gave Christian governments the right to take land they “discovered” despite these lands being already inhabited by Indigenous and other non-Christian people. The US laws were supported by the Church and justified by misreading of scriptures.  \nWhile the history was about churches\, the legacy and its ongoing impact affects us all. The discussion will include how these issues are of concern for the Jewish community\, in our commitment to Tikkun Olam\, repairing the world. We hope you will join us.  \nCo-sponsored by RIC (Reparations Interfaith Coalition of MA)\, The Coalition to Dismantle The Doctrine of Discovery\, CDT Congregation Dorshei Tzedek and Boston Workers Circle. \nRegister here.
