SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Write a New Protest Song
DESCRIPTION:As we head into (further) political uncertainty\, we come together to use our creativity and raise our voices. In this workshop led by Adah Hetko\, we’ll explore types and uses of protest songs\, and characteristics that make protest songs useful\, powerful\, and memorable. Then\, we’ll brainstorm song topics and phrases together\, take time to work on songs (individually or in small groups) in a supportive environment\, and regroup for an optional share-back. No songwriting experience necessary and all languages welcome. \n.We are working on finding another date to reschedule this event. \nAbout the presenter: Adah Hetko is a Yiddish singer/songwriter\, dance-leader and educator based in Roslindale\, MA. Several of her compositions are featured on the album Levyosn’s Lullaby\, recorded with her ensemble Levyosn (Ashkenazi Hebrew for “Leviathan”)\, and released by Borscht Beat in June 2023. Levyosn’s Lullaby has been described as “one of those special recordings that brings joy and a smile each time it is heard” (Ari Davidow) and “a warm Yiddish blanket [to] calm your frayed nerves” (Rokhl Kafrissen). The ensemble’s second album\, Levyosn’s Dream\, will be released in June 2026. Adah has developed her knowledge and skills in many ways\, including performing with ensemble Soloveychicks\, completing an ethnographic study of contemporary Yiddish women singers (and completing an MA in Jewish Studies at Indiana University in the process)\, teaching Yiddish songwriting with Daniel Kahn and Josh Waletzky\, studying Yiddish song and dance-leading with veteran artist Judy Bressler\, and teaching Yiddish songs to students ages 5-95. Check out Adah’s website to learn more about her work. \nThis program is presented in partnership by BWC’s Yiddish Committee and Acting for Racial and Economic Justice Committee.

SUMMARY:Yiddish Language Class - Advanced - Dorem Afrikanish: Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The course will open with an introduction to historical\, sociological and literary contexts of Yiddish in South Africa. \nWe will then study a selection of stories\, poems and monologues from some of South Africa’s finest Yiddish writers. Course content will include courageous\, critical and thought-provoking materials that will inspire meaningful discussions about race\, class\, language\, representation\, and Jewish and Yiddish community responses to oppression and discrimination. These short stories and poems will be interwoven with aesthetic poems on life\, love\, lust and local landscapes. Humorous monologues will round out the materials. \nThe course content will provide a snapshot of a significant\, yet rarely-studied Yiddish community. This content is highly relevant today. As we witness the global rise in white supremacy and the far-right\, grapple with issues of racism\, apartheid and allyship\, and experience deep rifts within Jewish communities\, South African Yiddish writing presents parallels that offer illumination\, insight\, and perhaps inspiration\, for the work before us today. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:A Besere Velt Chorus Open Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:A Besere Velt – A Better World – is a vibrant 80-member intergenerational community chorus that weaves the heartache and irrepressible idealism of Yiddish music into a vision of justice and humanity for the 21st century. \nFor our concert next spring\, we’re thrilled to reunite with the legendary Klezmatics. We’ve had the joy of performing together about once every decade\, and each collaboration has been an exhilarating celebration of Yiddish music and culture. This concert promises to be especially meaningful: The Klezmatics are celebrating their 40th anniversary\, and A Besere Velt is celebrating our 30th! \nHave you ever watched our chorus and thought\, “That looks like fun—I’d love to try it”? Or did you sing in the High School choir and think you’d like to try it again? Now is your chance! \nABV will hold open rehearsals (no auditions!) from September through November. No need to wonder what it’s like—come experience the joy for yourself. All are welcome\, regardless of singing ability or knowledge of Yiddish. Open Rehearsals are: 9/27\, 10/4\, 10/18\, 10\,25\, 11/8\, 11/15\, 11/22 \nThere’s nothing quite like raising your voice with a large group of people. Come sing with us and be part of something truly uplifting! \nFor details\, contact abv@circleboston.org.

SUMMARY:The Doctrine of Discovery: An Interfaith Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Please join Sarah Augustine (Author of The Land is Not Empty) and Rabbi Toba Spitzer Wednesday evening November 11th 7-8:30 on Zoom in an important conversation about Native American history and politics in our current moment.  \nSarah Augustine’s work explores the harms of the Doctrine of Discovery\, a set of international policies from the 15th Century that laid the groundwork for white supremacy\, racism and colonization of Indigenous Peoples and people of color around the globe. These papal policies were adopted into US law by the Supreme Court in 1823. The original policies gave Christian governments the right to take land they “discovered” despite these lands being already inhabited by Indigenous and other non-Christian people. The US laws were supported by the Church and justified by misreading of scriptures.  \nWhile the history was about churches\, the legacy and its ongoing impact affects us all. The discussion will include how these issues are of concern for the Jewish community\, in our commitment to Tikkun Olam\, repairing the world. We hope you will join us.  \nCo-sponsored by RIC (Reparations Interfaith Coalition of MA)\, The Coalition to Dismantle The Doctrine of Discovery\, CDT Congregation Dorshei Tzedek and Boston Workers Circle. \nRegister here.

For most of our community members\, if we want a Yiddish-speaking environment\, we have to proactively create one—so that’s what we’re doing! Here are some guidelines for being part of a language-immersion activity. \nAsking how to say something? Perfectly fine; we do this all the time. Tossing in a short English word or phrase—especially an idiom or quote—while keeping the conversation in Yiddish? Common among American Yiddish speakers and also perfectly fine. However\, we ask participants to avoid telling anecdotes or otherwise speaking in English for an extended period of time. Conversing in English disrupts the Yiddish-language environment\, and it takes away learning opportunities for students. Yiddish speakers and students at all levels are welcome at farbreng. It’s normal to feel nervous about your Yiddish\, but we applaud and encourage all students and speakers to use Yiddish. If you have any questions about the program\, please write to us at farbreng-boston@yugntruf.org

SUMMARY:An Evening with Emmaia Gelman
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Emmaia Gelman\, author of The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State \nJoin us for an evening of learning and discussion around Emmaia Gelman’s book\, The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State – the first-ever history of the Anti-Defamation League and its determined\, century-long alliance with Western empire. \nWe will gather Sunday\, November 22 from 7:00 – 9:00pm at a Brookline location and online. The exact physical location will be shared with you before the event in a separate email. \nREGISTER HERE. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Israel/Palestine Committee (IPC) and Acting For Racial & Economic Justice (AFREJ) Committee of Boston Workers Circle as well as JVP-Boston\, Together for an Inclusive Massachusetts (TIM)\, MTA Rank and File 4 Palestine\, Collective Action Against White Supremacy (CAAWS)\, and Sawa: Newton-Area Alliance for Peace and Justice. \nAbout the Book:\nThe Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is a major US political organization\, yet its politics have gone largely unexamined. While the ADL is often portrayed as a defender against antisemitism and racism\, its history shows that it is better understood as a proponent of the racial state and US empire. From “correcting” the embarrassing racial difference of immigrant Jews to policing the leftist politics of Black\, Arab\, and Jewish groups\, the ADL pursued a conservative version of civil rights paired with aggressive anti-communism. Even as it became an authority on white nationalism in the 1970s\, the ADL joined with the emerging anti-left\, anti-Arab\, and pro-Western neoconservative movement. \nThis history presaged the ADL’s work\, from the 1980s to the present\, in developing the hate crimes framework as a pro-state policing project\, which soon merged with the “War on Terror\,” the “antisemitism scare\,” and anti-Palestinian racism. The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State presents the ADL’s history through its conflicts with social justice movements\, illuminating the ADL’s outsize role in shaping the ideas about race and rights that have underwritten the US empire. \nAbout the Author:\nEmmaia Gelman is the founding director of the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism\, which examines the political and ideological work of Zionist institutions in Palestine and transnational contexts. She researches the history of ideas about race\, queerness\, safety\, and rights\, and their production as levers in surveillance\, “anti-terror”\, and war. Her teaching spans academic and community spaces. She co-hosts the podcast Unpacking Zionism. Emmaia is co-chair of the American Studies Association Caucus on Academic and Community Activism\, and a longtime activist in New York City.  Emmaia also co-edited\, along with Heike Schotten\, The Anti-Defamation League: A Critical Reader. \nAbout the Moderator:\nMerrie Najimy is an Arab American\, veteran public-school educator of more than 30 years. Her pedagogy and practice are grounded in anti-racism. She served as the president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association from 2018-2022\, where she led a social justice\, anti-racist agenda and helped to transform the MTA into a fighting union. In 2024 she cofounded NEA Educators for Palestine and MTA Rank and File 4 Palestine. Both are union caucuses that work to educate about Palestinian history and push the unions to protect academic freedom and grow the divestment movement. \nREGISTER HERE.
