Like Leafless Branches Coming Back to Life: A Sukes Willow Workshop

Online, on Zoom

Led by Ayelet Yonah Adelman and Liz Krushnic

Willow trees have held deep significance for Jews across time and space: imagery of resting our violins upon them to carry our grief from exile; rituals of thrusting their branches onto the earth in calls for redemption and rainfall; growth hormones and analogies of diaspora, regrowth and resilience; a Yiddish song about divination. In this workshop, we will explore some of these uses and meanings, with a special focus on willow’s ritualistic roles and symbolisms during the holiday of Sukkot as well as in several Yiddish poems and texts. It is our hope that in these times of collective rupture and profound brokenness, the medicine and magic of willow can help serve as a regenerative and restorative salve.

City girl at heart, Ayelet (she/her/hers) comes from loud bustling landscapes where she was drawn to the sheer force of life sprouting between pavement cracks. As an herbal practitioner, Ayelet is driven to deepen her understanding of how herbs and marginalized bodies can uplift one another and is intent on finding ways that holistic medicine, biomedicine and plant magic can work in synergy towards that end. A Hebrew and B’nai Mitzvah teacher, Jewish educator and at times Yiddish punk guitarist, Ayelet delights in Jewish culture, ritual & song. She believes in the power of communities to scheme about resisting structural violence and dream up glorious, fabulous and just worlds of possibility.

Liz Krushnic (she/her/hers) is a BWC member and former BWC Youth & Community Organizer. She absolutely loved getting to work with the amazing young people of BWC's Teens Acting for Social Change for four years, and now has the pleasure of hanging out with the very cool fifth graders of Congregation Dorshei Tzedek. Liz is currently in her second year of the Clinical Herbalist Program at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism. In her spare time, she loves baking birthday cakes, giving haircuts, and wearing excellent jumpsuits.
