A Call for Mutual Understanding and Cooperation

Show your support for rabbis who call for mutual understanding and cooperation between Jews and Muslims.

At the end of May, State Treasurer Tim Cahill attacked Deval Patrick for attending a 1,100 person meeting with the Muslim American Society of Boston, accusing the Governor of pandering to terrorists. A few days later, faith leaders from across Boston, largely organized by the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, held a press conference to condemn the treasurer’s comments. Rabbi Eric Gurvis of Temple Shalom in Newton, who spoke very movingly at the press conference, was then attacked in the pages of the Jewish Advocate by columnist Charles Jacobs who accused Rabbi Gurvis of pandering to terrorists. Immediately, 64 Rabbis from across the country, including many in Boston, signed onto a published letter supporting Rabbi Gurvis and calling for interfaith understanding and cooperation. See below for copies of both the article and the rabbis’ letter in response.

What can you do to help?

Take a minute to thank the rabbis for their stance. In particular, if you have a relationship with any of the institutions that they represent – write a letter, send an email or make a phone call to thank them for standing by Rabbi Gurvis and working to foster positive Jewish-Muslim relations in Boston.
