Social Action Overview

A core expression of our Jewish identity at the Workmen’s Circle is the pursuit of social and economic justice. We weave that commitment into every layer of the community -- our holiday celebrations, our culture and arts programming, our children’s Sunday school (Shule).

It is our hope that we can work together to make a difference in today’s world, that we can provide our many and varied social activists with a nurturing and energizing communal home, and that we can instill in our children a passion for justice.

Working Groups within the community organize around issues selected by our grassroots membership. Current Working Groups include Mid East Peace, Worker and Immigrant Rights, and Jewish-Muslim Relations.

  • Workmen’s Circle is a member of the anti-poverty organization, GBIO, the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization.
  • Our Public Conversations Project on Israel/Palestine aims to foster mutual understanding and trust on an issue that often divides us.
  • Speak out for social change through radical arts and culture.
  • Teens Acting for Social Change (TASC) is a one-of-kind youth group for grades 7 through 12.
  • Workmen’s Circle strives to create an atmosphere in which lively and non-judgmental dialogue around political issues helps inform us and inspire us to action.
  • Young adults organize Gragger/Noisemaker, our annual Purim party, with a different social justice theme and action each year.

What our members say:

“Workmen’s Circle brings together two of the most central things in my life: my identity as a Jew connected to the thousands of years of Jewish history and my identity as someone dedicated to social justice.”

“It feels really important that people understand there is a wide diversity of Jewish opinion and that the progressive values Jews have had historically are alive and well. If you have a vibrant community like the Workmen’s Circle then you speak as a representative of something that has some cultural force.”
