A Besere Velt -- A Better World – the Yiddish Community Chorus of Boston Workmen’s Circle welcomes new members every fall. No auditions! No knowledge of Yiddish required!
Proud to be a "voice" for justice, A Besere Velt has been a pioneer in bringing new life and contemporary meaning to the world of Yiddish folk music. The key: a unique blend of cultural heritage, community, and dedication to a better world.
Founded in 1997, under the direction of Lisa Gallatin, A Besere Velt is now an 90-member, truly multi-generational chorus. Performance venues have been varied: from temples to interfaith rallies, national conferences to picket lines, college campuses to senior centers. In December 2006 the chorus released its debut CD, recorded live at the Jewish Theater of New England.
The repertoire grew out of the shtetls, the sweatshops and union meetings, the camps and ghettos. Making the richness of the Eastern European immigrant experience accessible to a generation of non-Yiddish speakers, these folk songs contain the sounds of the history, the culture and the progressive values that would influence generations to come.

How to join:
MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN ONLY ONCE A YEAR. Start by coming to an open rehearsal in October. Open rehearsals provide an opportunity to participate in a working rehearsal before deciding to make a commitment for the year.

Send $18 per CD plus $3 for mailing costs ($1 postage for each additional CD) to Boston Workmen’s Circle, or to save S/H costs, stop by the office, M-F, 9am-5pm (call ahead).
