A Voice for Justice - and Workmen's Circle on PBS

A Besere Velt (A Better World) is proud to be giving back to Brookline this weekend at Keeping the Promise, the town's community celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In its role as a "voice for justice," A Besere Velt will perform arrangements of Yiddish folk songs and protest songs, sharing themes of brotherhood, solidarity, and hope for the future with the local community - finishing their performance with a singalong for the whole audience.

In broader Workmen's Circle news, PBS is putting together a 5-part series called "The Story of the Jews," looking at Jewish culture from ancient times up to the present day - and they recently filmed some footage at the I.L. Peretz Jewish School of Nassau (aka the Long Island Shule)! The Long Island Shule will feature in the fourth episode, which will focus on Eastern European Jewish culture and Jews in Eastern Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following Jews' fight for social and economic justice from shtetl culture through the end of World War II. The Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring is an essential piece of that history, and we're proud that PBS  has chosen to focus on the organization to illustrate progressive Jews' continued dedication to justice. The series will run this coming September.
